Menno Wigman (born October 10, 1966 in Beverwijk ; † February 1, 2018 in Amsterdam ) was a Dutch poet and translator .

life and work

Menno Wigman grew up in Santpoort ( Velsen ) and attended the Felisenum Gymnasium there, where he became enthusiastic about poetry at an early age . In 1985 he wrote two poems that were edited by his teacher of ancient languages , William Kramer, in a limited edition linocut by Lex ter Braak. Six issues have appeared over the years. In 1984 Wigman moved to Amsterdam.

His official debut appeared in 1997 under the title "'s Zomers stinken alle steden" (In summer all cities stink) . The work was well received and soon reprinted. Five years later, "Zwart als Kaviar" (black like caviar) appeared , for which he received the Jan Campert Prize . In 2004 “Dit is mijn dag” (This is my day) was published .

In 2005 Wigman spent three months as a poet at the Willem Arntsz Hoeve psychiatric institution in Den Dolder , where he kept a diary published in 2006. Records of his experiences during his stay can also be found in his work “De wereld bij avond” (The world in the evening) . In March 2009 “De droefenis van copyrettes” (The sadness of copy shops ) was published , a selection of his own work. In January 2012, “Mijn naam is Legioen” ( My name is Legion or My name is many ) was published. On January 26, 2012, he was appointed city ​​poet of Amsterdam.

Wigman was the editor of the literary magazine Zoetermeer and was also on the magazines Ink! , Awater and Kinbote involved. He translated poems by Charles Baudelaire , Thomas Bernhard , Else Lasker-Schüler and Rainer Maria Rilke , Leopold Andrian and Gérard de Nerval . His work has been translated into English, German and French, among others. The selection volume Im summer stink all cities (Cologne 2016) is published in German.

In 2014 health problems became noticeable. His heart stopped working properly, probably due to a reaction to an allergy in his youth. Menno Wigman died in 2018 at the age of 51 in the medical center of the Free University in Amsterdam .
