Location and economy

Weesp is about 15 km east of Amsterdam , on the former Zuiderzee , of which a marginal lake has been preserved. At Weesp, the car and train to Almere branch off from those to Amersfoort - Hengelo - Osnabrück . Weesp lies on the river Vecht . Weesp has a drug factory and other smaller businesses. Agriculture (cattle) is practiced in the area. A marina is used for water sports tourism.

history

The city originated in the Middle Ages on the border between the county of Holland and the principality of Utrecht . After much fighting, it finally fell to Holland in 1317. In 1355 the border fortress Weesp was granted city rights . After a failed siege by the French (1672) the fortress was renewed. In 1759, following the example of Meissen , the first porcelain manufactory in Holland was established, which produced remarkable products, but went bankrupt in 1770, after which production relocated to Loosdrecht in 1774 . Between 1850 and 1971, many residents found work in the Van Houten chocolate factory , which made chocolate from cocoa . The factory was closed in 1971 and the brand name "Van Houten" was sold to Leonhard Monheim AG .

Attractions

The Naardermeer bird reserve is located between Weesp and Naarden .

You can get from Weesp to Utrecht by boat across the Vecht or by bike on the banks of this river to Maarssen and Breukelen, and you can take a tour of many mansions and pleasure palaces built between 1600 and 1850 by wealthy merchants.

The town hall, built in Rococo style and completed in 1776, houses a beautiful collection of Weesper porcelain. The St. Laurens Church ( Lawrence of Rome Church ) from 1462 in the center has a Hemony -Glockenspiel.
