Joachim Jan Oortman , also Oortmann , (born May 23, 1777 in Weesp , † January 9, 1818 in Paris ) was a Dutch engraver whose main place of work was Paris.

Life

From his father Jan Oortman (1753 to May 5, 1825), the shape cutter and woodcarver in a calico printing company in Weesp, the Oortman was sent to Amsterdam for three years to train with the draftsman and printmaker Willem Kock (1761-1807) . He then became a pupil of the British painter Charles Howard Hodges (1764–1837), who was also living in Amsterdam at the time , on whose recommendation he finally went to Paris with Lambertus Antonius Claessens (1763–1834) in 1802, where he created his euvre, which was both qualitatively and quantitatively remarkable . Highlighted are u. a. his engravings based on models by Rembrandt van Rijn . As a member of the French National Guard, in connection with the negotiations against Marshal Ney and his execution (on December 7, 1815), he was exposed to the rigors of the weather, which led to his illness and ultimately his death.
