Michael Broadbent (born May 2, 1927 in Yorkshire , England , † March 17, 2020 in Berkshire , England) was a British wine critic . He was considered one of the most influential journalists and authors in the world of wine.

Life

From 1952, Broadbent initially trained as a wine merchant . Even then, he created his first wine notebook . He continued these records with the wines he tasted to this day. This includes the date, occasion, place and the names of the wines, as well as a brief description of the three criteria appearance , nose and taste . According to his own statements, by 2004 he had collected over 85,000 entries in 133 “ribbons”.

He completed his training in 1960 with the title Master of Wine . From 1966 until the 1990s , he was Senior Director of the wine division of the prestigious Christie's auction house in London .

In addition to his work as a book author on wine topics , he was a permanent contributor to the international wine magazine Vinum and published monthly tasting notes in the British magazine Decanter .

In addition, Broadbent was a sought-after guest speaker and leader of tastings of old and rare wines. In 1979 he was made a Knight of the Ordre national du Mérite . From 1986 he was President of the International Wine & Foods Society and an honorary member of the Academie du Vin de Bordeaux and several wine fraternities in France.
