Wine Brotherhood

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Wine Brotherhoods , wine convents , wine guilds or wine colleges see themselves as cultural associations for the purpose of drinking wine. The historical importance of brotherhoods and guilds can be found in the late Middle Ages in the emerging cities of Central Europe as professional associations of craftsmen and merchants. The wine trades also united their interests in guilds and brotherhoods. The only remaining wine brotherhood with a real historical background is the Noble Confrérie des Vignerons in Vevey, France . All others disappeared at the end of the 18th century . The guilds, convents, guilds and wine brotherhoods known today are newly founded, which, based on historical circumstances, serve to promote wine as a cultural asset (compare drinking culture in Europe ) and are generally not commercially oriented.

The Community of German-speaking Wine Brotherhoods (GDW) currently comprises 50 wine brotherhoods with more than 6,500 members in Germany , Austria and German-speaking Switzerland . The GDW is a non-commercial and non-commercial wine culture association that has set itself the task of preserving and promoting wine culture in general and of broadening and deepening the wine knowledge of its members in particular. It has been a registered association since 2007. The goals of the wine brotherhoods are based on the guidelines, the Deidesheim resolution of the Vienna Memorandum and the "Declaration of the Association of German-speaking Wine Brotherhoods" from 2000 in Oppenheim .
