geography
Vouvray is located in the heart of Touraine on the north bank of the Loire, ten kilometers east of Tours , on whose municipal area the municipality borders, and 14 kilometers west of Amboise . In the municipality of Vouvray, the Cisse flows into the Loire.
Vouvray wine region
Vouvray is known for its viticulture , especially with the high-quality grape variety Chenin Blanc . Worth seeing in the area are the steep river slopes in the outer bends of the Loire, some of which have caves built into them, for storing wine, or even today for living purposes. Viticulture has been documented since the 5th century and is closely related to Martin von Tours and the Archdiocese of Tours .
The 2040 hectare Vouvray wine-growing region in Touraine has enjoyed the status of an Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée (AOC) since December 8, 1936 - since the year INAO was founded. Dry, semi-dry and sweet white wines and sparkling wines are made . Only the grape varieties Chenin Blanc (which is sometimes also called Pineau de Loire here) are permitted for the Vouvray appellation . In addition, other varieties are grown in small quantities (for example Arbois ), which, however, have to be marketed under the Touraine appellation. The white wines can be stored for up to 20 years in good years. The drinking temperature is 8–12 ° C. The sparkling wines, on the other hand, are intended for quick consumption and are enjoyed at 8–10 ° C.
In 1999, 926 hectares were declared for white wine and 1168 hectares for sparkling wine. In the case of sparkling wine, a distinction is made between the qualities Vouvray pétillant with a bottle pressure of 1–2.5 bar and the Vouvray mousseux with a bottle pressure of at least 3.5 bar.
The wine-growing area includes the communes of Chançay , Noizay , Parçay-Meslay , Reugny , Rochecorbon , Tours-Sainte-Radegonde , Vernou-sur-Brenne and Vouvray and is therefore in the Indre-et-Loire department . The area is about 10 km upstream from Tours on the orographic right side of the Loire and the Cisse (a tributary of the Loire). The Montlouis-sur-Loire wine-growing region is on the opposite side of the Loire .
