Saint-Avertin is a French commune with 15,025 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Indre-et-Loire department of the Center-Val de Loire region . It belongs to the Arrondissement Tours and there since 2015 to the canton of Saint-Pierre-des-Corps . The inhabitants call themselves Saint-Avertinois .
geography
The municipality is located in the Loire Valley around three kilometers southeast of Tours city center on the banks of the Cher River . Saint-Avertin is a banlieue of Tours. In the north the municipality borders on Saint-Pierre-des-Corps , in the east on Larçay , in the south on Chambray-lès-Tours and in the west on Tours.
history
Since the 9th century, the place has appeared as the property of the Abbey of Saint-Martin. Originally it was known under the name Venciacum . Henry II of England had a bridge built over the Cher here in 1162. The current name goes back to the holy Avertin of Tours (English Aberdeen). During the revolutionary years the place was called Vençay .

Since 1980 there has been a town partnership with Steinbach am Taunus .
