Rochecorbon (formerly La rochecorbon ) is a French municipality with 3146 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in Indre-et-Loire in the region of Center-Val de Loire ; it belongs to the Arrondissement of Tours and the Canton of Vouvray .

history

Rochecorbon, located on the Loire , was a Gallic settlement in pre-Christian times . The natural grottos on the river were already inhabited in the Aurignacia .

The Romans called the place Vodanum ; its current name probably comes from Corbon des Roches , a nobleman who had a castle built over the Loire. His son built the ten-meter-high rectangular tower called the lantern , which was built around 1095 . The history of the place is also closely linked to that of the Abbeys of Saint-Martin de Tours and Marmoutier , both of which owned numerous estates in the region.

In 1808, the neighboring municipality of Saint-Georges-sur-Loire was united with Rochecorbon.
