La Riche , formerly La Varenne de la Riche , then Sainte-Anne is a French municipality with 10,448 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in Indre-et-Loire in the region of Center-Val de Loire ; it belongs to the Arrondissement of Tours and the canton of Ballan-Miré .

The name goes back to the former parish of Notre-Dame-La-Riche, which was divided into two halves by the construction of a city wall: the core was incorporated into Tours, while the area outside the city limits was raised to an independent municipality in 1793. La Riche is the location of the castle Plessis-lès-Tours (Montils-lez-Tours).

history

In 1092, the chapter of the Saint-Martin cathedral of Tours founded the Saint-Cosme priory in what is now the municipality of La Riche .

King Louis XI. made the Plessis-lès-Tours castle his favorite place to stay around 1463/68. In April 1483 he had Pope Sixtus IV. Franz von Paola , the founder of the Order of the Minor Brothers ( Paulaner Order ), summoned him to his sick bed with the reputation of performing miraculous healings. As a confessor, he stood by the king until the hour of his death on August 30, 1483 in the castle of Plessis.

Franz von Paola founded with the help of Charles VIII , son of Louis XI. in 1489 at Plessis-les-Tours a new community of the least brothers, the "Couvent des Grands Minimes du Plessis", in which the pious founder of the order died on April 2, 1507 and was also buried.

Closely connected with Plessis-les-Tour is the name of the writer Pierre de Ronsard , who from 1565 became Commendatar prior of Saint-Cosme for the next 20 years until his death . Financially independent thanks to the benefice of his office, he was able to devote himself to his writings and the publication of his entire works undisturbed.
