History, foundation

Founding members of the Krems Wine Brotherhood (1970)

Martin's Day (November 11th) in 1970 is the founding day of the First Austrian Wine Brotherhood in Krems . The revitalization of the Dominican Church and the preparations for the exhibition “1000 Years of Art in Krems” gave impetus to the formation of the Proponent Committee for the establishment of a wine brotherhood based on the Palatinate model. Of the first 24 members, personalities open to wine culture and enjoyment, half were active in viticulture. Today the brotherhood has 75 members from the Wachau , Kremstal , Kamptal , Traisental and Wagram wine-growing regions .

purpose

In the statutes of the association, from the founding chairman Dr. Herbert Franz elaborated, it says:

" The aim of the association is to bring together honorable men who stand up for the honesty and purity of wine, promote understanding enjoyment and respect wine as a cultural asset, and particularly strive to gain knowledge of the benefits of local wine for the affirmation of life broadening, in particular by cultivating sociability with events of a cultural nature such as wine baptism on St. Martin's Day , holding a training course for wine connoisseurs (participation is compulsory), by running a vinotheque in which fine wines are stored and tasted by order of the Brotherhood Council, by promoting the interests the Krems Viticulture Museum as well as by establishing connections with other wine fraternities at home and abroad and by traveling to areas of existing wine culture. "

The motto of the Vinum Chremisense Association, Decus Et Gloria Mensae , goes back to a letter from the abbot of Goldenkron , whose South Bohemian monastery had a reading courtyard on the site of today's Krems primary school on Hafnerplatz / Spitalgasse.

Brotherhood home

Brotherhood home in the Dominican monastery in Krems

The seat of the Krems Wine Brotherhood is the brotherhood home in the former Dominican monastery in Krems. The Dominican church with cloister was completed in 1264/65. In the eastern part of the old monastery there is an early Gothic building with a stepped gable, also known as the terminal house. On the oldest historical depiction of the medieval town of Krems around 1470, the striking tower can already be seen, which is used in the graphic design of the title page of the annual documentaries of the Wine Brotherhood.

management

The management of the association is incumbent on the head and the brotherhood council (head, deputy, secretary, cashier, librarian, vinotheque), the general assembly, the court of honor and the auditors.
