Harry Kühnel

Harry Kühnel (born March 24, 1927 in Vienna ; † August 13, 1995 in Krems ) was an Austrian historian and art historian .

Life

Harry Kühnel was born in Vienna and grew up in Steyr , where he attended school. He studied history, German and art history. After receiving his doctorate in 1952, he was to become director of the Steyr city archives, but soon followed the call of his teacher Alfons Lhotsky to Vienna. It was Lhotsky who recommended Fritz Dworschak Kühnel as an assistant for the state exhibitions in Krems.

In 1969 he qualified as a professor at the University of Salzburg for Austrian history with a special focus on cultural history. In the same year he became director of the newly founded Institute for Reality Studies of the Middle Ages and the Early Modern Era , of which he was director until his death. From 1957 to 1991 he was also head of the Krems Cultural Office , and in 1979 he became an associate professor .

In 1982 Kühnel founded the International Research Society Medium Aevum Quotidianum (MAQ), of which he was chairman until 1992.

Harry Kühnel died of a serious car accident at the age of 69.

He is also responsible for numerous city and museum guides and was the editor of numerous exhibition catalogs for the Museum of Modern Art in the Dominican Monastery.
