A vinotheque is a shop that sells wine . Usually the selected wine can be tasted by means of a tasting . Often there are also articles related to wine or regional specialties. In Italy the term enoteca is used.

Distinctions

There are basically two types of wine shops. While in specialist shops an independent merchant and wine connoisseur selects and markets the wines to be sold on the basis of economic considerations, only self-produced goods are sold in self-distribution. Self-distribution is operated by one or more producers. This means that the labor-intensive direct sales can be divided between several producers. In addition, a more representative restaurant can be chosen because the costs are shared.

Local, district or area vinotheques are regional vinotheques that limit themselves to wines and sparkling wines from a municipality, a district or a wine-growing region . These are operated by the producers themselves or by a dealer. The wines are usually offered at the same prices as at the winery or only with a small surcharge.
