Blaricum ( listen ? / I ) is a Dutch municipality in the extreme southeast of the province of Noord-Holland near the inland seas Gooimeer and Eemmeer , which form a natural border with the artificially created province of Flevoland in the IJsselmeer . Audio file / audio sample

Location and economy

The municipality has 11,187 inhabitants (as of January 31, 2019) and a land area of around 11.2 km². Blaricum is located 26 km southeast of Amsterdam , 3 km south of Huizen , 6 km northeast of Hilversum and 15 km northwest of Amersfoort .

The municipality is a popular place to live in the conurbation between Amsterdam and Utrecht with predominantly upscale residential areas in a landscape between the lowlands on the edge of the former IJsselmeer and the wooded and up to 25 high dunes around Hilversum. Agriculture and industry hardly play a role in the commuter community alongside the service sector.

history

In October 1899 Lodewijk van Mierop founded the group Vereniging Internationale Broederschap (literally: "Association of the International Brotherhood", VIB) in Blaricum, which should live according to the ideals of Christian anarchism .

During the German occupation of the Netherlands from 1940 to 1945 , the villa of the merchant Sam van Perlstein in Blaricum became the center of a resistance group . Sam van Perlstein escaped deportation as a Jew because two German soldiers, the graphic artist Werner Klemke and the photographer Johannes Gerhardt, had produced fake Aryan evidence for him and his family . In the van Perlstein villa in Blaricum, around 80 people hid in a tunnel and in an attic or were smuggled through the villa to other rescue locations: Jews, young men threatened with forced labor , German deserters and shot down British pilots. Although the Dutch police searched the villa several times, the hiding places remained undiscovered. Four issues of a newspaper for Jews in hiding were printed in the garage.
