Huizen ( ) is a medium-sized Dutch municipality in the province of Noord-Holland . 41,308 inhabitants live in an area of 23.32 km² (as of January 31, 2019).
The municipality is located 25 km east of Amsterdam , 10 km north of Hilversum or 24 km north of Utrecht and 18 km northwest of Amersfoort .
Huizen lies at an altitude of 0 to 11 meters above NAP on the Gooimeer , a narrow and only 2 km wide tributary of the IJsselmeer that separates the province of North Holland from the province of Flevoland , which was newly diked in the IJsselmeer in the second half of the 20th century . The place emerged from a fishing village and, due to its location in the central Dutch expansion belt between the big cities, has received a significant growth spurt in recent decades.
The transport infrastructure is very well developed and there are numerous (high-speed) road connections to the neighboring cities. There is no direct rail connection; the international airport Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is a good 34 km to the west.
Architecturally remarkable is the De Sfinxes (Sfinxwoningen) residential complex from 2003. This complex is spread over five buildings with 70 apartments, in a sphinx- like structure, mostly built into a lake. The Piramide residential complex is similar .
For years the place was the meeting point of the Theosophical Society Adyar , which held its annual executive committee there.
Before World War II, Huizen was the site of a notable radio station .
