Heerhugowaard ( listen ? / I ) ( West Frisian Heregeweard or De Waard , Lower Saxony Heerhugoweerd ) is a municipality in West Friesland in the Dutch province of North Holland . The area of ​​the municipality is around 40 km², of which 1.71 km² is water. It has 56,790 inhabitants (as of January 31, 2019). Audio file / audio sample

Location and economy

Heerhugowaard is located in a polder that was drained in the 17th century . The place has a station ( Heerhugowaard station ) at the junction of the railway lines Alkmaar – Den Helder and Alkmaar – Hoorn . Like the neighboring municipality of Langedijk to the west , it is a suburb of Alkmaar , which is around eight kilometers south-west , with which Heerhugowaard has now fully grown together.

In Heerhugowaard there are large residential areas, where after about 1970 in Alkmaar or in blast furnace operation of Velsen -working commuters have settled. There is an industrial park by the railway, where mainly smaller companies from many branches of the economy are based. There is also some agriculture.

history

The swampy, but fertile moorland in which the village is now located gradually ran under the ever-invading water in the Middle Ages. Monks of Egmond Abbey started building dikes in 1248 to prevent the lakes from spreading. Between 1250 and around 1550 a long but not always safe dike was built between Alkmaar , Hoorn , Enkhuizen , Medemblik , Schagen : the Westfriese Omringdijk (West Frisian perimeter dike ). During the Eighty Years War even the Spanish enemy helped to maintain the dykes through maintenance measures and regulations. Nevertheless, the dike south of Heerhugowaard, where there was a lake at that time, broke through several times. Between 1627 and 1631 this was polded, but the founders, among them the wealthy Alkmaar regents Floris van Teylingen and Nanning van Foreest , had to find that the newly won land did not offer the hoped-for large yield; it was of relatively poor quality. It was not until 1866 that the “Middenweg”, the dead straight road that cuts through every polder in North Holland, was paved with stones. The situation of the arable farmers improved through better fertilization . Only after around 1960 did the farming village develop into today's suburb of Alkmaar.

Bert Blase ( PvdA ) has been the provisional mayor of the municipality since February 20, 2017 . His colleagues include the alderman Leo Dickhoff ( Heerhugowaardse Onafhankelijke Partij ), Gido Oude Kotte ( CDA ), Monique Stam-de Nijs ( VVD ) and the municipal secretary Alexander Meijer .

Heerhugowaard has several churches. The need for recreation was met by creating two local recreation areas: Geestmer Ambacht and Blaue Loper, both around artificial lakes. You can surf, swim, fish, row, etc.
