Athletic career

Tony van Diepen has been taking part in athletics competitions since 2012. Back then, in June, he took part in the national championships over 800 meters, where he finished fourth. The following year he became the U18 indoor champion in the Netherlands and was able to improve his best time by more than six seconds to 1: 50.48 minutes during the season. In July he took part in the U20 European Championships in Riete. He was eliminated as sixth of his preliminary run. Overall, he came in 24th out of 28 starters. A year later he started at the U20 World Championships in the USA. After he was able to stay below 1: 50.00 minutes in the run-up to the World Cup, he did not succeed there, although his lead performance was sufficient for the semi-finals. In the semifinals, he was then eliminated just under fourth of his run. As the slowest of the three runs, his time meant overall 16th place. In the 2015 season he could not improve in terms of time, but took part in the U20 European Championships in Eskilstuna in the summer . He was eliminated in the semi-finals as the last of his run.

In 2016 he was able to increase his best time in Zurich to 1: 48.51 minutes. In 2017 he was able to compete in his first international adult championships at the European Indoor Championships in Belgrade. There he started over 400 meters. With a time of 48.57 s, however, he clearly lagged behind his best time in the run-up and was eliminated. In the summer he then competed again over 800 meters at the U23 European Championships . However, as fourth of his prelim, he was eliminated and ended up in 16th place overall. After only being able to contest a few 800 meter competitions in 2018, he took part in the European Championships in Berlin as part of the Dutch 4 x 400 meter relay . With 4th place, the quartet just missed out on the finals. In the addition of the two preliminary heats, it landed in ninth place. With the relay van Diepen took part in the World Relays in Yokohama in 2019 . After they narrowly missed the final again, they ended up in fifth place in the B final. Before that, van Diepen had already competed over 400 meters at the European Indoor Championships , this time in Glasgow. He made it into the final, in which he was able to win the bronze medal with a new national record of 46.13 s. In the summer he was able to increase his 800 meter best time to 1: 46.90 min.

So far, van Diepen has been the Dutch champion three times, twice indoors (2018, 2019) and once outdoors (2018).
