Complete medal table

The 24th European Athletics Championships took place from August 6th to 12th, 2018 in the Olympiastadion Berlin . The European Athletics Federation (EAA) announced Berlin as the venue at its 138th Congress on November 2, 2013 in Zurich . Germany hosted this sporting event for the third time after Stuttgart in 1986 and Munich in 2002 . A total of 48 athletics disciplines were held on seven days of competition.

These European Athletics Championships were part of the premiere of the European Championships , which were held at the same time as six other European Championships ( swimming , gymnastics , rowing , golf , cycling, triathlon) from August 1st to 12th in the Scottish city of Glasgow .

Applicants

Originally eleven European cities applied to host the competition, but apart from Berlin all of their applications withdrew, most recently Budapest , so that Berlin was chosen as the only non-competitive applicant as the venue.

Competitions

There was only one change in the competition program: for women, a second walking distance was added to the offer with the 50 km walk . For the first time, the same number of disciplines were on the program for women and men. The competitions differed only insignificantly: the hurdles for women were slightly lower than for men, the short hurdle distance was over 100 meters for women and 110 meters for men. Otherwise, only the weights of the impact and throwing devices as well as the number and individual disciplines in the all-around event differed: the men had a decathlon , the women a heptathlon in the program.

Qualification standards

The qualification for the European Athletics Championships 2018 had to be achieved between January 1, 2017 and July 30, 2018. Relays had to be reported by July 22, 2018.

Attendees

A total of 1572 athletes (744 women and 828 men) from 49 nations and 2 teams were registered. Due to the revelations of longstanding Russian state doping in the course of the McLaren Report in 2016, Russian athletes were not allowed to run under the Russian flag, but some were allowed to compete under the neutral flag ( Authorized Neutral Athletes (ANA)).

The German Athletics Federation (DLV) nominated 128 athletes (62 women and 66 men) its largest to date team at continental championships, including five defending champions. The Austrian Athletics Association (ÖLV) nominated 16 athletes (7 women and 9 men). The Swiss Athletics Federation nominated 52 athletes (26 women and 26 men).

The Dutch Athletics Association (KNAU) registered 46 athletes, including three defending champions with the two sprinters Dafne Schippers and Churandy Martina and heptathlete Anouk Vetter .

Regulations for the best of the year up to distances of 400 meters

As with the European Championships in Amsterdam in 2016 , the rule was also applied in Berlin that the twelve fastest of the year in the sprints and hurdles sprints up to and including 400 meters were directly in the semifinals, where three runs were held each time; all other athletes competed in the heats to qualify for the semifinals.

Athletic performance

The results of this EM were on an overall high level. There were services to be classified differently depending on the discipline. The level wasn't that high, for example, in the men's middle distance, in the men's long and triple jump , in the decathlon , over 400 meters in the women's, in the women's long jump. In contrast, a high level was found in the men's pole vault , the women's sprints, the women's 20 km walk and the women's hammer throw .

The following records were set

  • 11 new European Championship records
  • 23 new national records
  • 5 new U23 national records

In the medal ranking , Great Britain and Poland were ahead with seven European Championship titles each , while the British had more silver and bronze medals on their account and thus led this ranking. Germany followed with six European champions . In the end, five countries each had three European champions in their ranks: France - a total of ten medals, Belgium - a total of six medals, Greece - a total of six medals, Belarus - a total of seven medals - and Norway - a total of five medals. Spain - a total of ten medals - and Ukraine - a total of seven medals - each had two European champions in their teams. Russia , which was used to success at earlier European championships, did not appear in this ranking. Russia was excluded from participation by the IAAF due to the devastating doping problem there.

For the individual athletes, the following services are particularly worth mentioning.
