Course of competition

The favorite for this heptathlon was the 2016 Olympic champion and 2017 world champion Nafissatou Thiam from Belgium. Her strongest competitors were the German vice world champion from 2017, Olympic fifth from 2016 and EM fourth from 2014 Carolin Schäfer, the Dutch European champion from 2016 and World Cup third from 2017 Anouk Vetter and the British World Cup fifth from 2017 Katarina Johnson-Thompson. The extended favorites for the Austrian Ivona Dadic included as EM -Third of 2016 and WM -Sechste 2017, the two Ungarinnen Xénia Krizsán and Györgyi Zsivoczky-Farkas as EM -Vierte or .Fünfte 2016 and Dutch Nadine Visser as WM -Siebte from 2017 and World Cup eighth in 2015.

The fastest 100-meter hurdler in the first discipline was the German Louisa Grauvogel, who was the only athlete to stay under thirteen seconds with 12.97 seconds. The Czech Kateřina Cachová - 13.29 s, Schäfer - 13.33 s, Johnson-Thompson - 13.34 s - and Estonian Grit Šadeiko - 13.37 s were quite clearly behind as the next placed heptathlete. With 13.69 s, Thiam stayed well below her potential and lost some ground.

The Belgian made up for this lost ground with her 1.91 m in the high jump , the second exercise. Johnson-Thompson jumped just as high. Cachová, who had jumped 1.85 m, followed at a considerable distance. The Swede Bianca Salming and Dadic each reach 1.82 m. Schäfer mastered 1.79 m together with eight other athletes. In the interim ranking, Johnson-Thompson took the lead with 2193 points. Thiam was 51 points behind her. Cachová was third - 71 P behind the British, followed by Grauvogel - 136 P back - and Schäfer - 152 P back.

The third exercise was the shot put . With 15.35 m, Thiam set a new personal record as the best athlete. Vetter achieved 14.79 m, the German Mareike Arndt reached 14.65 m. It was followed by the Ukrainian Alina Schuch with 14.43 m and Schäfer with 14.12 m. In this discipline, Schäfer had blundered Götzis at the all-around meeting , which is why she was relieved to achieve an acceptable distance here. Dadic exceeded the 14-meter mark as the sixth best shot putter with 14.06 m. Thiam took the lead now. Johnson-Thompson, who came to 13.09 m, was in second place and was 98 points behind. Third was Schäfer - 179 P back - ahead of Cachová - 194 P, Dadic - 196 P, Vetter - 202 P - and Krizsán - 235 P.

In the 200-meter run , which concluded the first day, Johnson-Thompson ran an excellent 22.88 s, the fastest time ever achieved in a heptathlon at European Championships. Grauvogel also set a personal best as the second fastest runner with 23.10 seconds. Then Arndt and Dadic followed with 23.61 s each - also personal bests for both. Schäfer ran in fifth for 23.75 s, Vetter in sixth for 23.89 s. Thiam - 24.81 s - and Cachová - 24.25 s - lost many points in this discipline. Johnson-Thompson started the second day as the leader with 4017 points. Thiam was second, 89p behind Schäfer, who was 169p behind Johnson-Thompson. Dadic followed in fourth place - 171 P back - ahead of Vetter - 202 P - and Cachová - 230 P.

In the long jump , the first discipline of the second day, Johnson-Thompson extended her lead. With 6.68 m it had the greatest width. But Thiam was only a little behind at 6.60 m. The gaps behind were a bit bigger. The Belgian Hanne Maudens achieved the third-best result with 6.42 m, ahead of Cachová - 6.36 m, Dadic - 6.35 m, Vetter - 6.30 m, Schäfer - 6.24 m - and Krizsán - 6.24 m. In the interim standings, Johnson-Thompson's lead over Thiam was now 113 points. Dadic had conquered third position, 178 P behind the leader. Schäfer was fourth - 311 P back - ahead of Vetter - 338 P - and Cachová - 341 P.

The penultimate exercise was the javelin throw , which was not one of the strengths of the leading Briton. With 42.16 m she achieved a personal best, but she lost many valuable points. Thiam scored 57.91 m, the largest distance ever achieved in a heptathlon at European Championships. The Swiss Géraldine Ruckstuhl threw the spear to 56.31 m and set a U23 national record. Schäfer was also not far behind with her 53.73 m, which was also a personal best. In addition, with Vetter - 51.25 m - and Schuch - 51.20 m - two other athletes exceeded the 50 meter mark. Dadics 47.42 m were not enough to defend the medal rank. Thiam had recaptured the top just in time, because the 800-meter run that followed was not one of her strengths. The Belgian had developed a clear advantage of 192 points over Johnson-Thompson and thus went into the final race as the favorite. However, as a strong 800 meter runner, the Brit should not be underestimated. Schäfer was now third again, her deficit in second place was 88 p, in first place it was 280 p. Schäfer's lead over the fourth-placed cousin was 75 p. That should actually be enough, because the Dutch woman was significantly weaker than in the middle distance Shepherd. Dadic was 89 P behind the bronze rank. The Austrian's best time was around three and a half seconds below Schäfer's best result, so something was still possible for Dadic. But it had to go optimally for her.

With 2: 07.17 min, Xénia Krizsán made up many points as the fastest 800 meter runner and was seventh in the final classification with 6367 points. The French ran a personal best of 2: 09.35 minutes in second, but she was well behind and finally came in eighteenth. Johnson-Thompson also undercut the 2:10 mark with 2: 09.84 min. Nafissatou Thiam was considerably slower than the British, but her 2: 19.35 minutes were enough in the end. She became European champion with 6816 points and was 57 points ahead of silver medalist Katarina Johnson-Thompson. Carolin Schäfer ran the tenth best time with 2: 14.65 minutes and thus won bronze. In the end she had collected 6602 points. Ivona Dadic improved herself to fourth place with her 2: 11.87 min as the sixth best 800 meter runner with 6552 points. Anouk Vetter finished fifth with 6414 points. Sixth place went to Kateřina Cachová, who set a personal best with 6400 points. Behind Krizsán, the Austrian Verena Preiner came in eighth. She also achieved a new personal record with 6337 points.
