Race course

As with the men, there were hardly any European long distance athletes who could compete with the African women on a world level. One of these exceptions was the Dutchwoman Sifan Hassan, who won bronze at the 2017 World Championships . She was also vice European champion in 2014 and had other successes over 1500 meters . The main competitors for her were the Turkish double European champion over 5000 and 10,000 meters from 2016 Yasemin Can and the Israeli Lonah Chemtai Salpeter, here in Berlin the winner over 10,000 meters .

The race was scheduled without preliminary heats, which was possible without any problems given that there were only nineteen participants. With Britain's Eilish McColgan in the lead, the pace wasn't particularly fast. The 1000 meter sections were covered in just over or just under three minutes. In the sixth lap, Can took the lead, the pace was not particularly increased. Little by little the field shrank and after three kilometers a seven-man leadership group had formed with Can, Salpeter, the German Konstanze Klosterhalfen, McColgan, Hassan, the Dutchwoman Susan Krumins and the British Melissa Courtney, which was about five seconds from a four-person Had dropped the chase group. Later, Krumins and Courtney also lost touch. At 4000 meters, Salpeter led the top group of five.

On the last kilometer, Hassan accelerated the pace considerably. She took the lead and started a long spurt. Shortly before the start of the last round, the Dutch woman pulled away from her rivals. McColgan was second, followed by Salpeter, Can and Klosterhalfen. The German was the next to tear off in the first corner of the final lap, then Can could no longer keep the pace of the small chasing group. Right at the front, Sifan Hassan ran towards a sure win and became the new European champion. Her fast final section was enough to set a new European championship record with 14: 46.12 minutes. Eilish McColgan also confidently defended her second place. Salpeter and Can fought for the remaining bronze medal. Yasemin Can finally prevailed, Lonah Chemtai Salpeter was even disqualified in the end for leaving the track. Konstanze Klosterhalfen came fourth ahead of Melissa Courtney and Susan Krumins.
