Eilish McColgan (born November 25, 1990 in Dundee ) is a Scottish athlete who competes in medium and long-distance running , but wants to turn to the marathon .
career path
McColgan graduated from the University of Dundee with a degree in mathematics and accounting in 2013 .
Athletic career
Eilish McColgan gained her first international experience at the Commonwealth Youth Games 2008 in Pune , where she finished eighth in the 3000 meter run in 9: 58.42 minutes and was eliminated over 1500 meters in the first round.
In 2011 she reached the final in the obstacle course at the U23 European Championships in Ostrava , where she finished sixth in 9: 52.02 minutes.
Between 2012 and 2014 McColgan became the British obstacle course champion. In 2012 she was able to qualify for the 3000-meter obstacle course for the Summer Olympics in London , but failed there with 9: 54.36 minutes in the preliminary round .
In 2013 McColgan set a new best time at the World Championships in Moscow and reached the final, in which she finished tenth in 9: 37.33 minutes.
In 2014 she took part in the Commonwealth Games in her native Glasgow for the first time and finished sixth in 9: 44.65 minutes. Since then, McColgan has concentrated more and more on the flat medium and long distance distances.
With a new personal best in May 2016 over 3000 meters, McColgan was able to qualify for the European Championships in Amsterdam , where she finished sixth in the 5000 meter run in 15: 28.83 minutes . There was also nothing to prevent a qualification for the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro ; there she reached the final as the only British representative , in which she finished 13th in 15: 12.09 min.
In 2017 McColgan started the year as British indoor champion over 3000 meters. Internationally she won the bronze medal in the 3000 meter run at the European Indoor Championships in Belgrade in 8: 47.43 minutes behind her compatriot Laura Muir and Yasemin Can from Turkey. She qualified over 5000 meters for the World Championships in London and achieved a new record there in the run-up, with which she fought for a place in the final . McColgan finished in tenth place with 15: 00.43 min.
At the beginning of 2018, she became the British 1500 meter indoor champion. Internationally, she was eliminated in the first round of the 1500 meter run at the World Indoor Championships in Birmingham and was tenth over 3000 meters in 9: 01.32 minutes. In early April McColgan again took part in the Commonwealth Games in the Australian Gold Coast and was sixth both over 1500 meters and 5000 meters. In August she won the silver medal behind the Dutchwoman Sifan Hassan at the European Championships in Berlin in 14: 53.05 min .
In 2019 McColgan became British 5000 meter champion.
In May 2020, McColgan announced that she would like to start on the marathon distance in the future, but initially wants to compete over 5,000 or 10,000 meters at the Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2021 and will not compete in the marathon run at the Olympic Games in Paris until 2024 .
