Laura Muir (born May 9, 1993 in Milnathort ) is a British medium and long-distance runner and current British record holder over the 1500 meter distance and the European record holder over 3000 meters in the hall.

Career

Laura Muir made her first international appearance in 2013 when she won the bronze medal over 1500 meters at the U23 European Athletics Championships . In the same year, she was able to qualify for the World Athletics Championships in Moscow for the 800-meter run , in which she reached the semifinals. The following year she was able to qualify for major events, but mostly failed in the preliminary round. However, this year she improved Yvonne Murray's 27-year-old Scottish record over 1500 meters to 4: 00.07 min.

The 2015 season got off to a successful start early on when she finished fourth over 3000 meters at the European Indoor Championships . At the following World Championships in Beijing , she reached 5th overall in the final. In 2016, Muir continuously improved and succeeded in the London Grand Prix the national record of Kelly Holmes to break, with a time of 3: 57.49 minutes. During this time, she traveled as a co-favorite to the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro . There, however, she only finished in 7th place, which was disappointing for her. Just two weeks later, on August 27, 2016, at the Areva meeting in Paris , she improved her own national record by over two seconds to 3: 55.22 minutes, the 16th fastest time ever run over this distance, and gets up the all-time best list in 13th place (as of December 2016). With this victory, Muir also secured the overall ranking over 1500 meters in the IAAF Diamond League .

In the 2017 indoor season, Muir improved primarily in the longer disciplines of 5000 and 3000 meters. At the indoor meeting in Karlsruhe on February 4, she achieved a new European record over 3000 meters in a duel with the Kenyan Hellen Obiri with a time of 8: 26.41 minutes and with this time she is fifth in the all-time indoor world best list (status: February 2017). Two weeks later, Muir set a new European record over 1000 meters and improved the 11-year-old mark of Russian Julija Fomenko in a time of 2: 31.93 minutes. She missed Maria de Lurdes Mutola's world record by a little more than a second.

At the European Indoor Championships in 2017 , she set a new championship record of 4: 02.39 min over 1500 meters and thus also improved the British record previously held by Kelly Holmes . Muir also managed to set a new championship record over 3000 meters. She prevailed against the Turkish Yasemin Can in the last two rounds and improved Fernanda Ribeiro's record, which was over 20 years old, to 8: 35.67 minutes. After her many successes in the hall, high expectations were placed on her for the London World Championships . However, the preparations were not ideal. In the final over 1500 meters she fought for a medal until the end, but was ungrateful fourth with 4: 02.07 min. Over 5000 meters she finished sixth with a new personal best of 14: 52.07 min.

The 2018 indoor season was to be crowned with international successes again. In mid-February she won the British Indoor Championships over 3000 meters with a fast final kilometer in 8: 46.71 minutes. At the World Indoor Championships in Birmingham she also started over 3000 meters and was able to secure bronze behind Genzebe Dibaba and Sifan Hassan . Two days later she also competed in the 1,500 meter final, for which she was able to qualify the day before, and was again second behind Dibaba, but this time ahead of Hassan. In August she won the gold medal at the European Championships in Berlin over 1500 meters ahead of Sofia Ennaoui from Poland and her compatriot Laura Weightman . Almost three weeks later she also won the 1,500 meter run final of the IAAF Diamond League, which was held as part of the Memorial Van Damme in Brussels.

In 2019 she set another British indoor record in the 1-mile race at the Indoor Grand Prix in Birmingham with a time of 4: 18.75 minutes. At the European Indoor Championships in Glasgow in 2019 , Muir ran the 3000 meters with a new championship record of 8: 30.61 minutes to gold.

Muir graduated from the University of Glasgow with a degree in Veterinary Medicine in summer 2018 .
