Laura Elizabeth Weightman (born July 1, 1991 in Alnwick ) is a British middle-distance runner . She has specialized in the middle distance run , but also starts over the long distance .

Career

On June 24, 2012, she won her first British championship in Birmingham in the 1500 meter run . She also qualified for the 2012 Summer Olympics in her own country and was nominated for the Games by the British Olympic Association . In the Olympic Stadium in London she started the 1500 meters and qualified for the final together with her compatriot Lisa Dobriskey . With a time of 4: 16.60 minutes, she finished seventh directly behind her compatriot.

A year later she became the British Athletics Federation both for the European Team Championship in 2013 as well as for the world championships in 2013 nominated. At the European team championship she was used in the 3000 meter run and finished second behind the Russian Jelena Korobkina in a time of 9: 03.11 minutes , securing the United Kingdom 11th points. In the end, she and the British team took third place behind Russia and Germany. At the World Championships she started again on her special route, the 1500 meters. In the Luschniki Olympic Stadium in Moscow , she could not prevail in the heats and was eliminated from the competition. In the end result she took 29th place.

On June 28, 2014, she secured the British championship title over the 1500 meters for the second time in a time of 4: 09.77 minutes. A little later, she took part for England in the 1500 meter run at the Commonwealth Games 2014 in Glasgow , Scotland . On July 29, 2014, she won the silver medal in a time of 4: 09.24 seconds behind Faith Kipyegon from Kenya and ahead of Kate van Buskirk from Canada. In the same year she also took part in the 2014 European Championships in Zurich . She was able to build on the good performances of the season at the Letzigrund stadium and took the bronze medal behind Sifan Hassan from the Netherlands and Abeba Aregawi from Sweden.

At the 2015 World Championships in Beijing , she qualified in the heats for the semi-finals over the 1500 meters, but had to do without a start. In the London Stadium she started the 1500 meters in the special discipline and qualified for the finals for the first time at world championships. There she finished sixth in 4: 04.11 minutes.

A year later she started again for England at the Commonwealth Games . In the Australian city of Gold Coast , she started the 5000-meter run at the 2018 Commonwealth Games and won the bronze medal in 15: 25.84 behind the two Kenyans Hellen Obiri and Margaret Chelimo Kipkemboi .
