Angelika Cichocka (born March 15, 1988 in Kartuzy ) is a Polish athlete who competes in the middle-distance run and became European champion in this discipline over 1500 meters in 2016.

Career

In 2007 Cichocka competed internationally for the first time and took part in the European Athletics Junior Championships , from which she was eliminated in the preliminary run. At the European Athletics U23 Championships in 2009 , she made it to the final, where she finished eighth over 1500 meters. She was able to qualify for both the European Championships in 2010 and 2012 , but was eliminated both times in the preliminary round. At the World Indoor Athletics Championships in 2012 , she reached fifth place.

In 2014, Cichocka won a medal in international championships for the first time, namely silver over 800 meters at the World Indoor Athletics Championships in the Polish city of Sopot . At the European Athletics Championships , however, she was eliminated in advance.

In 2015 she won the silver medal at the European Indoor Athletics Championships in Prague and finished eighth in the 1500 meter World Athletics Championships . In 2016 she surprisingly won the gold medal over 1500 meters at the European Athletics Championships and was able to prevail against the favorite Sifan Hassan . At the Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro , she reached the semifinals over 800 and 1500 meters.
