Olga Ivanovna Dwirna

Olga Ivanovna Dwirna ( Russian Ольга Ивановна Двирна , English transcription Olga Dvirna; born February 11, 1953 in Wasjutynzi , Cherkassy Oblast , Ukrainian SSR ) is a former Russian middle-distance runner who competed for the Soviet Union .

At the age of 17, Olga Dwirna was third in 4: 28.4 minutes over 1500 m at the European Junior Athletics Championships in 1970 . In view of the strong competition in the USSR, it took several years before she was able to compete in championships again internationally. After becoming the first Soviet champion in the 1500 m in 1978 in 4: 02.8 minutes, she entered the 1979 Summer Universiade in Mexico City and won two silver medals. In 2: 00.77 min she was defeated only by her compatriot Nadeshda Muschta over 800 m and in 4: 14.5 min in the 1500 meter run she was only beaten by the Romanian Natalia Mărăşescu . At the Summer Universiade 1981 in Bucharest she was third in the 1500 meters in 4: 06.39 min.

1982 was her best year. At the Soviet Championship in Kiev she set her personal best with 3: 54.23 minutes and won her second national championship title. At the European Athletics Championships in Athens she won over 1500 m in 3: 57.80 minutes with over a second advantage over her teammate Samira Saizewa , and the later Olympic champions Gabriella Dorio in third place and Maricica Puică in fourth place still remained under the four -Minute limit.

1983 Olga Dwirna was again fifth in the Soviet Championship in 4: 05.73 min. With a height of 1.65 m, her competition weight was 52 kg.
