Complete medal table

The 23rd European Athletics Championships were held from July 6 to 10, 2016 in the 1928 Amsterdam Olympic Stadium. It was the first time that the European Athletics Championships were held in the Netherlands . On November 4, 2011, the capital Amsterdam was awarded the contract over its competitors Istanbul ( Turkey ) and Split ( Croatia ). The budget for the five-day event is said to have been 19 million euros .

It was the second European championships that were held before the Olympic Games with a reduced program - without the walking competitions - with only 44 instead of 47 disciplines. Instead of a marathon, this time there was a half marathon in contrast to the last European championships with a shortened program.

The qualifying competitions in discus and javelin were held on Museumplein .

Participants and contributors

On June 22, 2016, 104 athletes, 51 men and 53 women, were nominated by the German Athletics Association (DLV) , whereupon Sabrina Mockenhaupt announced her rejection due to an injury one day later. Due to injury, Manuel Stöckert and Robert Polkowski also had to withdraw. In the end, 101 participants were sent from Germany. In the short term, Raphael Holzdeppe had to refrain from starting. It was the largest DLV team at European Championships for 18 years with an average age of around 25 years.

The Switzerland sent 48 athletes u. a. with the reigning 400 meter hurdles European champion Kariem Hussein . Poland sent their largest team to date - 73 people - with the defending champions Anita Włodarczyk ( hammer throw ) and Adam Kszczot ( 800-meter run ). Great Britain nominated 98 athletes, including six defending champions.

Russian athletes and their status

After the IAAF, the world athletics association , extended the ban on members of the Russian national association for systematic doping, which was pronounced in autumn 2015, for an unlimited period in mid-June 2016, they were denied participation in the European championships. Russian athletes were among the most successful at these events , at the previous European championships they had ranked fourth in the medal table . Athletes who had properly subjected themselves to doping controls were exempt from the ban. You have been given the opportunity to apply for a personal launch permit. The only participant who received one was the middle-distance runner Julia Stepanova , who had actively participated as a whistleblower in uncovering the scandalous conditions within her association. Stepanova did not compete under the Russian flag, but under that of the European Athletics Federation in the 800-meter run, but was unsuccessful.

Criticism of the use of naturalized athletes by Turkey

There was strong criticism of the composition of the Turkish squad . The Turkey began seven former Kenyans , two former Jamaican and a former cuban one, usually equipped only recently with Turkish citizenship. As a rule, the athletes in question did not even live or train in Turkey. Turkey owed all four gold medals, four of the five silver medals and thus fourth place in the medal table to these naturalized runners. There were critical and angry statements from several associations - also from the European association, the EAA , changes in the IAAF regulations are being sought.

doping

In addition to the problem with Russia and the question of the right to start for Russian athletes, there were again seven cases at these European championships in which athletes were disqualified for violating the doping regulations:

  • Kevin Moore ( Malta ), 100 meters , disqualified in the preliminary run and thus eliminated - he tested positive for illegal substances. The test was carried out using a sample taken on June 11, 2016. The sprinter received a four-year ban until September 24, 2020. His results, which he had achieved from June 11, 2016, have been canceled.
  • Gábor Pásztor ( Hungary ), 200 meters , eliminated in the preliminary run - He was tested positive for illegal substances after his race at these European championships on July 7th and received a four-year ban until June 7th, 2020. His result from these European championships was canceled.
  • Jamel Chatbi ( Italy ), 5000 meters , first eleventh / 3000 meter obstacle , initially fifth - he tested positive for the banned substance clenbuterol during a training check during the 2016 Olympic Games . After 2009, it was Chatbis second positive test. The new finding initially led to a ban for two years and eight months until April 2019, which was extended to August 2024 by the Italian anti-doping agency NADO italia because of the second offense.
  • Hakan Duvar ( Turkey ), 3000 meter obstacle, initially twelfth - he was found to have deviations in his biological passport , which led to a four-year ban and, among other things, the cancellation of the result at these European championships. The suspension began on December 26, 2016 and ends on December 25, 2020.
  • Andrei Toader ( Romania ), shot put , initially sixth - his doping test from May 10, 2016 contained the prohibited substance testosterone and was therefore positive. The athlete has been stripped of the results he has achieved since then, including his result from these European championships. He was also given a four-year ban from May 10, 2016 to May 9, 2020.
  • Olessja Powch ( Ukraine ), 100 meters, eliminated in the semifinals / 4 × 100 m , fourth place - a doping test on June 15, 2016 showed her a testosterone concentration that was significantly too high . She received a four-year ban from June 15, 2016 to June 14, 2020, and all of her results since the positive doping test have been canceled.
  • Olha Semljak ( Ukraine ), 400 meters , eliminated in the semifinals / 4 × 400 m , sixth place - A doping test on July 5, 2016 found a testosterone concentration that was significantly too high . Since she had previously been proven to have been doping fraud, she was suspended for not four but eight years from July 5, 2016 to July 4, 2024, and all of her results since the positive doping test were canceled.

Athletic performance

The level of performance at these European championships has to be rated high , especially in view of the Olympic Games that will follow in just a few weeks . The highlight of the year that the athletes are working towards is of course more with these games than with the continental championships, which are, however, an important stopover.

In the medal standings , Poland was ahead with six European Championship titles and six other medals. Germany and Great Britain followed with five titles each, Germany also had four silver and seven bronze medals on their account, the British had three silver and eight bronze medals. Behind were Turkey and the Netherlands with four European champions each. In the end, Spain and Portugal each had three European champions in their ranks. France , Italy and Belgium each received two gold medals. Russia , which was used to success at previous European championships, did not appear in this ranking, as already described above.

For the individual athletes, the following services are particularly worth mentioning.
