Özlem Kaya (born April 20, 1990 in Mersin , Turkey) is a Turkish middle-distance and obstacle runner .

Athletic career

In 2011 she took part in the U23 European Championships in Ostrava and finished eleventh there. At the European Championships in Helsinki in 2012 , she was eliminated in the preliminary round. In 2012 Kaya was able to qualify surprisingly for the Olympic Games in London over 3000 meter obstacle, in which she was eliminated in the preliminary stages. In the following two years it could not keep up with the continually improving top in Europe and no longer posted any noteworthy results. In 2014 she reached a 14th place at the European Championships in Zurich . In 2015 she won the bronze medal at the Universiade in Gwangju, South Korea . She also took part in the World Championships in Beijing, where she achieved a new personal best in the run-up, made it to the final and finished in 13th place.

In June 2016 Kaya won the bronze medal at the European Championships in Amsterdam behind Gesa Felicitas Krause and Luiza Gega . At the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro , she finished eighth in her run in the preliminary run and thus missed a final. In the 2017 indoor season, Kaya was able to qualify over 1500 for the European Indoor Championships in Belgrade , but was eliminated there in advance. In the outdoor season she qualified again for the World Championships in London , where she was eliminated with 9: 37.06 min in the lead . At the World Student Games in Taipei two weeks later, she again won the bronze medal in the obstacle course.
