A little above the hut is the small church of San Giovanni Gualberto . To the south-east of the hut is the Monte Buso, on which dinosaur tracks were found in a tunnel from the First World War , which influenced the theories about the geological history of the Trentino.

The European long-distance hiking trail E5 also passes the Lancia Hut .

history

The origins of the hut go back to the 1920s, when the area around the Col Santo was discovered as a ski area by a small group of enthusiasts from Rovereto. An alpine pasture initially served as a Spartan ski hut.

In 1931, the Rovereto section of the Trentino Alpine Club first came up with the idea of building a refuge on the Alpe di Pozza . When Vincenzo Lancia died in 1937 , this was taken up and it was decided to name a new refuge after the Turin car maker and racing driver. This proposal found the support of the Lancia family and provided the decisive boost, also financially, which finally cleared the way for the construction of the hut.

On November 20, 1937, the Rovereto section was given the building site by the municipality of Vallarsa , and in the spring of 1938 the Italian Alpine Association CAI also guaranteed financial support for the construction. The first work began feverishly. First, the access road, a former Austrian war route , was prepared so that the building material could be transported to the construction site. The refuge was designed by the architect Giovanni Tiella and on July 17, 1938 the foundation stone was laid.

At the end of October 1939, the work was completed. A sudden onset of winter prevented the official inauguration, which had already been planned. This finally took place due to the Italian entry into the war on June 10, 1940 only one year later on October 20, 1940.

Between 1989 and 2002 the hut was renovated in several stages.
