The Rifugio Stavèl Francesco Denza (often just Rifugio Denza ) is a refuge in the Italian province of Trento on the edge of the Presanella . It is located at an altitude of 2298 m slm and belongs to the Società degli Alpinisti Tridentini , a fairly autonomous section of the CAI . The hut is open from mid-June to mid-September and offers beds for 56 mountaineers.

location

The refuge is located in the upper Val Stavèl, a side valley of the Val di Sole below the north face of the Presanella . It was built on a glacier terrace below the moraine of the Presanella glacier. There is a small lake a few minutes' walk above the hut. The Rifugio is the classic starting point for climbing the Presanella over the Presanella Glacier.

history

Austro-Hungarian war camp at the Rifugio Denza

Construction of the refuge started in 1898. In August 1899, the hut with 14 beds could be inaugurated. It was named after the Barnabite Father and meteorologist Francesco Denza , who helped the Trentino Alpine Association to set up the first meteorological measuring stations in Trentino.

During the First World War , the Austro-Hungarian army built several barracks around the Rifugio, which, like all other SAT shelters, was confiscated shortly after the war began. This barrack town served as the base camp for the second Austro-Hungarian line on the Tonale front.

After the end of the war, a chapel was built next to the Rifugio Denza from the remains of the war barracks. Over time, the refuge has been expanded and modernized several times.
