Taher al-Masri

Taher Nashat al-Masri ( Arabic طاهر المصري; * March 5, 1942 in Nablus , Palestine ) is a Jordanian diplomat and politician who was Prime Minister of Jordan for a few months in 1991 .

Life

MP and Ambassador

Masri, son of an Egyptian father and a Lebanese mother, grew up in Nablus and attended the local An-Najah National College. He then completed a degree in economics at the University of Texas at Austin , which he completed in 1965 with a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.). In July 1965 he became a member of the Central Bank of Jordan.

In May 1973, al-Masri was elected a member of the Assembly of Representatives (Maislis an-Nuwwāb) , of which he was a member until November 1974. At the same time he acted from May 1973 to November 1974 as Minister of State for the occupied territories. After leaving the government and the assembly of deputies, he switched to the Foreign Ministry as ambassador in January 1975 and was initially ambassador to Spain between April 1975 and August 1978 . He then acted as ambassador to France from November 1978 to May 1983 and was also permanent representative to UNESCO in Paris between October 1978 and May 1983 . In addition, he was accredited as the diplomatic representative of Jordan to the EC between July 1978 and May 1980 and as a diplomatic representative in Belgium from February 1979 to May 1980 . He then held the post of Ambassador to the United Kingdom from June 1983 to January 1984 . In January 1984 he again became a member of the Assembly of Representatives and was a member of it until July 1988.

Minister and Prime Minister

At the same time, al-Masri became foreign minister in the cabinet of Prime Minister Ahmad Obeidat in January 1984 and held this ministerial office until December 1988 in the second cabinet of Prime Minister Zaid al-Rifai . From April to September 1989 he was Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economics in the first cabinet of Prime Minister Zaid ibn Shaker . In November 1989 he was again a member of the Assembly of Representatives, which was now a member until November 1997. During this period he was Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee between November 1989 and January 1991.

In January 1991 he again took over the post of Foreign Minister in Mudar Badran's third cabinet . Subsequently, al-Masri became Prime Minister himself as successor to Badran on June 19, 1991, but only held this post for five months until he was replaced by Zaid ibn Shaker on November 21, 1991. During his tenure, he took over between June and November 1991 also the office of defense minister in his government.

Speaker of the Assembly of Representatives and President of the Senate

Masri was again chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs from November 1992 to July 1993 and then acted as spokesman for the Assembly of Representatives between November 1993 and October 1994.

In September 1998 al-Masri became a member of the Senate (Maǧlis al-Aʿyān) , the upper house of the Jordanian Parliament ( Majlis al-Umma ) appointed by the king . In December 2009 he became President of the Senate and held this office until he was replaced by Abdelraouf al-Rawabdeh on October 24, 2013.
