Ahmad Obeidat

Ahmad Abdel Majid Obeidat ( Arabic أحمد عبيدات; * November 18, 1938 in Hartha, Irbid , Transjordan ) is a former Jordanian government official and politician who was Prime Minister of Jordan between 1984 and 1985 .

Life

After attending school, Obeidat studied law at the University of Baghdad and then entered the public service in 1962, where he was initially an official in the customs department of the Ministry of Finance and between 1962 and 1964 an official in the public security office. In 1964 he switched to the General Intelligence Service DMA ( Da'irat al-Muchabarat al-Amma ) as a civil servant , of which he was director from 1974 to 1982. He then became Minister of the Interior in the second cabinet of Prime Minister Mudar Badran in 1982 and held this office until 1984.

On January 10, 1984 Obeidat replaced Mudar Badran and took over the office of Prime Minister himself. He held this position until April 4, 1985 and was then replaced by Zaid al-Rifai . In his government he also held the post of Defense Minister from 1984 to 1985. Furthermore, he became a member of the Senate (Maǧlis al-Aʿyān) , the upper house of the Jordanian Parliament ( Majlis al-Umma ) appointed by the king .

In 1988 Obeidat became President of the Environmental Society and in 1990 Ambassador to the United Nations for Humanitarian Affairs. After signing the Israeli-Jordanian peace treaty on October 26, 1994, he resigned his Senate mandate before becoming a member of the Senate again in 1997.
