The Israeli-Jordanian peace treaty is a peace treaty between Israel and Jordan that was signed on October 26, 1994 by King Hussein of Jordan , Israeli Prime Minister Yitzchak Rabin and US President Bill Clinton . The treaty is based on the Washington Declaration that Hussein, Rabin and Clinton signed on July 25, 1994 in the American capital.

content

The contract contains 30 articles. Article 1 stipulates that from now on there will be peace between the two states. Article 3 describes the demarcation: the border between Israel and Jordan is the Jordan River ; in the event of a change in the course of the river, the boundary would have to be redrawn. The border in the section between Ein Gedi and Bet She'an is not determined, as Jordan insists that the final demarcation should be determined together with the Palestinian Authority . Article 6 assures that Jordan is allowed to withdraw larger amounts of water from the Jordan.

Further development

A special clause in the peace treaty allowed Israel to use two enclaves, Naharajim in the Jordan Valley and Zofar or Ghumar in the Arava region in the south, a total of around 1,000 dunams (247 acres), for 25 years. Linked to this was the stipulation that the lease agreement should be routinely extended. In October 2018, however, in the midst of internal unrest in Jordan , King Abdullah II announced that the lease would not be extended to October 25, 2019, which expired on November 10, 2019.
