The Rifugio Velo della Madonna (also short Rifugio Velo , German hut on the veil of the Madonna ) is a refuge in the Palagruppe ( Dolomites ) in the Italian Trentino . Its name is derived from the veil of the Cima della Madonna ( 2752  m ) directly above the hut .

Location and ways

The hut is located at 2358  m slm in the southern Pala group at the western foot of the Cima della Madonna. The most important valley location is San Martino di Castrozza , about 3 kilometers to the northwest. From there and from several other starting points in Val Cismon , several trails lead to the hut, but all of them have the character of easy via ferratas at least in places . The bike hut can also be reached from Val Pradidali to the east. This route takes around five hours, while the approach from Val Cismon takes around 2.5 to 3 hours. The most important neighboring hut is the Rifugio Pradidali ( 2278  m ), with which the bike hut is connected via the via ferrata Ferrata del velo and Ferrata del Porton (about 2.5 hours). The Rifugio Rosetta ( 2581  m ) can also be reached (about 4 hours).

Tours

The Rifugio Velo is used by climbers as a starting point for tours on the Cima della Madonna, especially the Schleierkante ( spigolo del velo ) route, which starts near the hut and is one of the most famous climbing routes in the Dolomites. In addition, the nearby Sass Maor is climbed from the Velohütte. There are also some sport climbing routes at the foot of the wall of the Cima della Madonna .

Nearby destinations for hikers and via ferrata climbers are the Cima della Stanga ( 2550  m ) and the Cimerlo ( 2503  m ). Another short via ferrata is the Ferrata della vecia to the north of the hut . The Cima di Ball ( 2802  m ) and the Cima di Val di Roda can also be reached from the Velohütte.

history

The first building at this point was a bivouac box erected in 1966 by the Società degli Alpinisti Tridentini (SAT), a section of the Club Alpino Italiano (CAI) . In 1980, SAT built today's hut, which has 64 beds and is supplied with a material cable car. Outside the opening times (around mid-June to mid-September) there is a winter room with 10 seats available.
