The Rifugio Monte Calino - San Pietro or just Rifugio San Pietro (German San Pietrohütte ) is a refuge of the Riva del Garda section of the Trentino Alpine Association (SAT).
Location and surroundings
The Rifugio San Pietro is located on Monte Calino, also known as Monte San Pietro ( 1065 m slm ), in the municipality of Tenno in the province of Trento at 976 m slm right on the edge of a rock face with a wide view of northern Lake Garda and the surrounding mountains . A small chapel is immediately adjacent to the refuge, which is dedicated to St. Peter ( Italian: San Pietro ) and which gives the hut its name. Above the Rifugio San Pietro is the hut of the dialect and local poet Giacomo Floriani (1889–1968), who came from Riva del Garda and was also one of the founding members of the Riva del Garda SAT section.
history
The SAT refuge is located at a point where a sacred building already stood in the Middle Ages . At the end of the 13th century, a chapel located here was first mentioned in a document. Over time, the small church on Monte Calino has been rebuilt again and again. It was looked after and guarded by hermits who built a shelter next to the chapel. At the end of the 18th century the sacred building slowly fell into disrepair and with the secularization the chapel was closed and only used as a shelter for humans and cattle. After the Napoleonic era, the chapel was re-consecrated and partially restored. In the period that followed, masses were held on San Pietro only very sporadically, without a hermit constantly staying here.
In 1930, the Riva section of the SAT acquired the hermitage and converted the building adjacent to the chapel into a refuge, which was opened in 1931. Between 1995 and 1996 the rifugio was completely renovated and reopened in 1997.
