Riva del Garda is an Italian commune ( comune ) with 17,602 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Trento ( Trentino-Alto Adige region ). It is the administrative seat of the Alto Garda e Ledro valley community .

geography

Riva del Garda is located on the northwestern shore of Lake Garda about 41 km southwest of Trento on an alluvial plain at 70  m slm and is therefore the second lowest municipality in Trentino after Nago-Torbole . The place below the Monte Rocchetta ( 1575  m slm ) is bordered in the east by the much lower Monte Brione ( 376  m slm ). The most important flowing water in the municipality is the Varone , which flows east of the city center into Lake Garda. Together with the towns of Arco and Torbole, which are also located in the alluvial plain, Riva del Garda forms the so-called La Busa (dialect for the hole), a settlement area with over 30,000 inhabitants that has almost grown together over time.

The municipality Riva belonging fractions Campi, Pregasina , Sant 'Alessandro and Varone and two between the 1950s and 1970s created and northeast of the historical center town of parts Rione De Gasperi and Rione 2 Giugno.

history

Riva was already settled in Roman times.

Riva belonged to Austria-Hungary from 1815 to 1919 . At that time the place was called Reiff am Gartsee . During the First World War , the Riva fortress , built in 1508, was shelled by the Italian artillery, which caused considerable damage. After the war it was ceded to Italy in the Treaty of St. Germain .

Many parts of the former fortifications are still completely intact and can be visited. In addition to the Bastione, you can see the San Nicolo beach battery in the marina, as well as the Bellavista beach battery in the far northwest corner of the lake directly on Ponale Street .

Today Riva del Garda is a popular tourist destination. The landmark is the slightly inclined Torre Apponale , a 35 m high clock tower from 1220 that towers over the port of Riva. It is located in Piazza 3 Novembre and from it you have a view of the port and city.

Another attraction is the Rocca di Riva , a town castle that is completely surrounded by water and dates back to the 12th century. The castle, later owned by the Scaliger family , got its present appearance in the 19th century. Today it houses the municipal museum Museo Civico , in which, among other things, paintings and archaeological finds are exhibited.

The Villino Campi was built in 1890 .

Until 1936 the place was the terminus of the local line Mori-Arco-Riva . The existing train station now serves as a restaurant.

tourism

  • Riva del Garda is also a popular destination for mountain bikers . In addition to the annual bike festival, Riva del Garda is the most popular destination for mountain bikers doing a transalp , as the place is located at the southern end of the Alps. Since 1989, Riva has been the final destination on the Heckmair route , and since 1995 also on the Joe route .
