Ruffrè-Mendola (until 2005 only Ruffrè , German historical: Ruffreit ) is an Italian municipality with 407 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the Non Valley in Trentino . In addition to the village of Ruffrè, the municipality includes the Mendel Pass with the village of Mendel. However, there are some German-speaking South Tyroleans who have been demanding a connection to the neighboring municipality of Kaltern for years . Other neighboring communities are Sarnonico (German historical: Sarnunich ) and Cavareno .
history
The first mention of Ruffrès as "mansum de Rifreto" dates back to 1271; from the year 1332 the designation of origin "de Rufredo" is attested.
A church dedicated to St. Anthony is mentioned around 1300 , the current parish church mostly dates from the early 15th century.
Ruffreit-Mendel experienced its heyday after 1903, when the Mendelbahn was opened. Tourism found its way here; So even some members of the House of Habsburg stopped by on the Mendel Pass, this gave the location additional reputation.
