Mezzocorona (German obsolete Kronmetz ), until 1902 Mezzotedesco (German obsolete Deutschmetz ), is a municipality with 5539 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Trento in Italy . It is located in the Adige Valley about 20 kilometers north of Trento on a slight rise of 219 meters under the high rock walls of Monte di Mezzocorona. Corona is an old word for rock, ledge or rock cave (still called “la crona” in the local dialect today). Mezzocorona is the administrative seat of the valley community Comunità Rotaliana-Königsberg .

geography

The place is on the Italian Brenner motorway (A 22), on the Bolzano – Trento railway line and on the Non Valley Railway . Mezzocorona is a wine and fruit growing community. The Teroldego grape variety dominates in viticulture .

history

The fertile Rotaliana plain at the outflow of the Noce river from the Non Valley into the Adige Valley was already settled in prehistoric times, as finds from the Mesolithic show. In Roman times the place was important as a waypoint on the Via Claudia Augusta . In 1174 "Metze" was first mentioned in the traditional notes of the Augustinian canons of San Michele all'Adige . The parish is first attested in 1199. Mezzotedesco (Deutschmetz) - as the place used to be called - was the seat of the court until the 14th century. In 1902 the community was renamed Mezzocorona, because the local Italian population took offense at the old name. After Mezzocorona was annexed to Italy, the new name was also confirmed by the Italians in 1924.

Mezzocorona cave castle

In the high rock face, on which Mezzocorona leans, is the Castello di San Gottardo (German: Kronmetz Castle ), which has already been compared to the American Cliff Dwellings , at a moderate height . The facility is accessible via a steep path, but is not highlighted as a tourist attraction by the local authorities because of the risk of falling rocks.

partnership

The partner municipality is Dußlingen in Baden-Württemberg .
