history

Caldonazzo was first mentioned in a document in 1116 and is situated two kilometers from the eponymous Caldonazzo lake at the foot of steep mountain forests, where the steep Centatal finds its way into the open landscape ( 450  m slm ).

The place has an eventful history, there is evidence of Roman settlements. For example on the "Colle di Tenna", where Roman mule tracks lead to an old "Statio Militaris". Today there is a 12th century chapel on this site. Traces from the time of the Great Migration show that the place has played an important role in history several times.

The place belonged to the Danube Monarchy for a long time (see Dominion Caldonatz ), the border to the Kingdom of Italy ran only a few kilometers away on the Folgaria plateau , where numerous bunkers and buildings from this period can still be seen today. The best preserved is the Gschwent factory , which is now a museum. The whole of Valsugana offers those interested in history numerous striking points that tell from this time.

Trapp, an Austrian noble family

There is an old, stately castle between the church and the cemetery. Already weathered, but still clearly visible on the old walls is the fresco of a coat of arms, which the Austrians should be familiar with because it shows the familiar red-white-red shield.

The Trapp family, who belonged to an old Austrian noble family, lived in this castle. In 1461 she left her home and her ancestral castle Trautenburg near Leutschach in Styria (still exists today). For over 300 years, until 1794, when the last offspring of Count Trapp died, Caldonazzo was closely associated with this name. The historiography says they were just, philanthropic and efficient. The memory of their charity lived for a long time in the population.

Parish Church of St. Sixtus

In addition to the old townscape with its old, picturesque houses away from the center, the church dedicated to St. Barbara should also be mentioned, the old part of which bears the name of Pope Sixtus. Built in the 13th century, it has been renewed and rebuilt over the years. It received its present face in 1836, and its style stands out clearly from the Romanesque church tower. Inside, an old painting depicting Pope Sixtus, surrounded by Saints Borromeo, Francis and Sebastian, reminds of the plague that raged in 1630, from which Caldonazzo was not spared. The painting dates from 1632.

Infrastructure

Caldonazzo is on the Trento – Venice railway line . The place is also opened up by the provincial roads (Strada provinciale) SP1 SP113 and is connected to the trunk road network via the state roads SS47 and SS349 as well as the A22 motorway.
