Cles (German obsolete Glöß ) is both the capital and municipality of the Non Valley , north of Trento and southwest of Bolzano in the autonomous region of Trentino-South Tyrol ( Italy ). Cles is located on the Lago di Santa Giustina (German: Santa-Giustina-See) and has 7031 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019).

history

In 1869 the Tabula Clesiana was found near Cles , which is now kept in the Castello del Buonconsiglio in Trento. A decree of the Roman Emperor Claudius from the year 46 AD is reproduced on this bronze plaque . It is an important testimony to the Roman settlement of the Alpine region.

The Castel Cles was the ancestral seat of the noble family of the same name. Bernhard von Cles (1485–1539) became bishop of Trent in 1514 and cardinal in 1530. From 1527 to 1539 he was President of the Privy Council under Ferdinand I.
