Letizia Paternoster (born July 22, 1999 in Cles ) is an Italian cyclist who competes in races on track and road .
Athletic career
In June 2016 Letizia Paternoster won a stage of the Albstadt women's stage race in the junior category. In July, she was in the Italian Montichiari triple European junior champion in track competitions points race , scratch , and with Elisa Balsamo , Martina Stefani and Chiara Consonni in the Team Pursuit . Only a few days later she won two junior world championship titles on the cycling track of the Center Mondial du Cyclisme ( World Cycling Center ) in Aigle, Switzerland , in the points race and also in the team pursuit together with Balsamo, Stefani and Consonni. At the 2016 UCI Road World Championships in Doha , she finished fifth in the junior road race.
The following year, Paternoster became two-time Italian junior champion on the road, in road racing and in the individual time trial . A few weeks later she won five titles in the endurance disciplines individual pursuit , elimination race , omnium , team pursuit (with Chiara Consonni, Martina Fidanza and Vittoria Guazzini ) and together with Consonni for the first time at the UEC European Track Championships for Juniors / U23 2017 in Sangalhos in Portugal Two-man team races held by juniors . In addition, on July 20, 2017, she set a new junior world record in the singles pursuit with 2: 20.92 minutes . This made her the outstanding athlete at these European championships.
A few weeks later, she won a silver medal in the individual time trial and a bronze medal in the road race at the European Junior Championships on the road. At the European Railway Championships in Berlin in the same year she became (with Elisa Balsamo, Tatiana Guderzo and Silvia Valsecchi ) European champion in the team pursuit.
At the UCI Track World Championships 2018 in Apeldoorn , Letizia Paternoster won the bronze medal together with Maria Giulia Confalonieri in the two-man team and in the team pursuit and thus her first world championship medal in the elite. At the third round of the Track Cycling World Cup 2018/19 in Berlin , she fell while riding in a two-man team and initially lay unconscious on the track. She suffered a concussion and bruised ribs and was soon able to leave the hospital.
In Italy, the successes of Letizia Paternoster and her equally successful teammates were enthusiastically received. Paternoster was referred to as the "Queen of Anadia" and the "star" of a "female kindergarten", which is sure to be a great "Campionissima".
At the UCI Track World Championships 2020 in Berlin , she finished second in the Omnium behind the Japanese Yūmi Kajihara at the beginning of the year . In the two-man team driving (Madison) she finished third with Elisa Balsamo.
