UCI Track World Championships for Juniors 2017

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The UCI Juniors Track World Championships 2017 took place from 23 to 27 August 2017 in Velodromo Fassa Bortolo in Italy Montichiari instead.

Letizia Paternoster won three world titles after having become two-time junior world champion the year before.

The Junior World Track Championships took place for the second time since 2010 in Montichiari and for the fifth time in Italy. Around 100 athletes and around 200 athletes from 42 countries were registered. The original plan was to host the World Championships in Shenyang , China .

Since many junior athletes have moved up into the elite class since last year, there were only a few drivers who tried to defend their world title from last year, including the two Russian drivers Pawel Rostow and Dmitri Nesterow ( team sprint ), theirs teammate Marija Nowolodskaja ( One tracking ), the Italians Chiara Consonni and Letizia Paternoster ( Team pursuit ), from New Zealand Ellesse Andrews (Team Sprint) and the Australian Jade Haines ( two-side driving ).

The most successful team was that from Russia with a total of twelve medals, including five gold medals. The driver Pawel Pertschuk won two, in the short-term disciplines Sprint and Keirin. Both titles in the team sprint went to the Russian teams, in the juniors the two previous world champions Rostov and Dmitri Nesterow contributed to the victory. In addition, the Russian juniors were successful in the team pursuit and set a new world record in the first round of the competition with 4: 00.972 minutes. The hosts from Italy took second place in the nation ranking with seven medals. The two-time world champion Paternoster from last year was involved in three victories ( two-man team driving , omnium and team pursuit), in the single pursuit she won silver. Her compatriot Consonni also contributed to the victories in the two-man team driving and in the team pursuit.

Third place with a total of six medals went to France, whose young star Mathilde Gros alone won three gold medals in the individual short-term events (keirin, sprint, 500-meter time trial ). The fourth gold medal went to junior Rayan Helal in the sprint. Denmark came fourth with four medals, three of which were gold. The medal winners were dominated by Julius Johansen and Johan Price-Pejtersen .

The team of the Association of German Cyclists followed with a total of five medals, three of which went to Lea Friedrich . Carl Hinze won two silver medals, including one in the team sprint with Timo Bichler and Elias Edbauer , whereby the three drivers set a new German record with 45.314 seconds . Swiss and Austrian cyclists could not win any medals, although the Swiss pursuers set a new national record with 4: 04.299 minutes. They finished fourth, as did Valère Thiébaud in the single pursuit and Alex Vogel in the Omnium .

During the world championships, previous world records were improved nine times , some of them several times during competitions, for example in team pursuits or team sprint competitions. The French Mathilde Gros improved the record over 500 meters to 33.937 seconds, the Russian sprinter team the team sprint to 44.355 seconds, the New Zealander Andrews the record in the qualification of the 2000-meter single pursuit to 2: 18.080 minutes and the Italian junior women Fourth set the record in the team pursuit to 4: 21.554 minutes.

During the world championships, the two paracyclers Stefano Cecini and Pierre Amighini tackled a world hour record on the tandem , which, however, was not official. The duo fell due to a puncture and the attempt initially failed.
