Athletic career

Rayan Helal began cycling at the age of six, initially racing on track and road . In 2016, at the age of 17, he decided to focus on the track, after coaches had long confirmed that he was predestined for the sprint on the track. First, he trained at the velodrome of Eybens , since 2017 as a member of the Pôle France Olympique in Vélodrome National in Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines , a suburb of Paris .

In 2017 Rayan Helal became Junior World Champion and Junior European Champion in sprint. In December of that year, the 18-year-old rider started in the elite race of the Track Cycling World Cup 2017/18 in Santiago de Chile and, together with Melvin Landerneau , who was almost the same age, and François Pervis, who was 15 years older , finished second in the team sprint , at the following race in Minsk he was third in the same discipline with Benjamin Édelin and Michaël D'Almeida . He was also a three-time national junior champion.

The following year, Helal was three-time U23 European champion in sprint, keirin and team sprint (with Landerneau and Florian Grengbo ). At the 2018/19 Track Cycling World Cup in Berlin , he finished third behind the Australian Matthew Glaetzer and the Dutch Matthijs Büchli , after he had knocked six-time Olympic champion Jason Kenny out of the tournament. In 2019 he won silver in the team sprint as well as bronze in the sprint and Keirin at the U23 European Railway Championships with Sébastien Vigier and Landerneau. At the European Games in Minsk he won bronze in the keirin and in the team sprint (with Grégory Baugé , Quentin Caleyron and Quentin Lafargue ).
