Maurice Farman
Maurice Alain Farman (born March 21, 1877 in Paris , † February 25, 1964 in Nice ) was a French track cyclist , automobile racer , aviation pioneer and entrepreneur.
Maurice Farman was the son of an English newspaper correspondent in Paris and spent most of his life in France. In 1894, Farman, who together with his brother Henri also built bicycles , became French sprint champion . Together with Henri he formed a strong tandem team . In 1901 he won the Grand Prix de Pau car race on a Panhard , which is considered the first Grand Prix in automotive history. In 1909 he received a French license number six.
After his cycling career, Maurice Farman and his brother founded the Farman company for the production of automobiles and airplanes. The two brothers worked independently on the design and worked together in production; the third brother, Dick, worked in the administration of the company. Maurice Farman also experimented with telegraphy and telephones on airplanes. In 1936 the French aviation industry was nationalized and Farman retired.
