After running the Track Cycling World Cup in November 2012, the Junior World Championships were the second international event in this velodrome. 238 athletes from 32 countries took part. Around 9,000 spectators followed the races in the velodrome over five days.
On the second day of the competition, the female track four ( Amy Hill , Hayley Jones , Emily Kay and Emily Nelson ) from Great Britain set a junior world record in the team pursuit . However, it was the first time that the team pursuit was held with four athletes in one team - as with the men - instead of only three as before.
The most successful national team at these world championships was that of Australia with a total of 13 medals, including six gold, followed by Great Britain in second place (six medals, three gold) and Germany in third (five medals, three gold). For the British team, these competitions also meant a dress rehearsal for the track cycling competitions of the Commonwealth Games , which will take place at the same location in 2014.
The most successful athlete was the Briton Dannielle Khan , who won two gold medals - in the sprint and in the 500-meter time trial - as well as a silver medal in the keirin . The most successful German athlete was Maximilian Dörnbach , who won the 1000 meter time trial and won the bronze medal in the team sprint together with Jan May and Patryk Rahn . Manuel Porzner won further gold medals for the German national team in the scratch and Anna Knauer in the omnium . Switzerland remained without medal success; Austrian junior athletes were not at the start.
