history

Evidence suggests the presence of Celtiberian Turduls and Romans . The area was under the city of Talabriga and was not a settlement of major importance. The first mentions of today's location are documented from 957 .

In 1220 Sangalhos was an independent community. Since the first half of the 14th century it was a vila and an independent district and received city rights by King Manuel I in 1514 .

In the course of the administrative reforms after the Liberal Revolution in Portugal in 1822 , the Sangalhos district was dissolved and came to the Oliveira do Bairro district, then to São Lourenço do Bairro, to finally belong to Anadia since 1853 .

With the arrival of the Linha do Norte railway line in 1864 , the community slowly began to flourish, in particular through wine cellars, ceramic production and bicycle factories. 1985 Sangalhos was given the status of a vila (small town) again.
