Avelãs de Cima is a place and a municipality in the central region of Portugal .

history

In the course of the Reconquista , a number of localities in the region were repopulated. The oldest documented place in the municipality is Canelas, which was first mentioned in 952.

In the 12th century Avelãs de Cima was already a municipality that is still made up of villages around the three main towns of Avelãs de Cima, Boialvo and Canelas. Avelãs de Cima was also the seat of an independent circle.

The place received its first city rights under King D. Dinis (1279-1325). King D. Manuel renewed the town charter on January 10, 1514. Since then, the place has had the title of a vila (small town).

In the course of the administrative reforms after the Liberal Revolution in 1822 , the Avelãs de Cima district was dissolved in 1836. Since then it has been the largest parish in Anadia County.
