Lori Fisler Damrosch

Lori Fisler Damrosch (born November 4, 1953 ) is an American lawyer and professor at Columbia University .

Education and professional career

The study of Russian Studies at Yale University concluded Damrosch in 1973 with a Bachelor of Arts from. This was followed by a law degree, at the end of which she received her doctorate in 1976 as a Juris Doctor . Between 1976 and 1977 she worked for Judge Jon O. Newman on the United States District Court for the District of Connecticut . She then moved to the US State Department , where she dealt, among other things, with issues of American-European cooperation and foreign trade . From 1981 Damrosch worked as a lawyer for Sullivan & Cromwell , one of the leading law firms in New York . There she was part of the procedural law department and led numerous proceedings, including before the Iran-United States Claims Tribunal . In 1984 she received a call from Columbia University. From 1995 to 1996 she was a Senior Fellow at the United States Institute of Peace . Since 1999 she has held the Henry L. Moses Professorship for International Organizations and since 2010 the Hamilton Fish Professorship for Diplomacy . From January to December 2009 Damrosch was visiting professor at Harvard University .

Working in the field of international law

In addition to her academic work in the field of international law, Damrosch also holds numerous honorary functions in this area. From 2003 to 2013 she was editor-in-chief of the American Journal of International Law alongside Bernard H. Oxman , before José Enrique Alvarez and Benedict Kingsbury took over this position. She is also a member of the American Society of International Law , of which she was Vice President from 1996 to 1998. Damrosch has been President of the Society since April 15, 2014. From 1993 to 2005 she was also a member of the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague . Damrosch was primarily responsible for the drafting of amicus curiae briefs in numerous proceedings before the United States Supreme Court dealing with the domestic validity of an International Court of Justice judgment .

Damrosch is in the states New York and Connecticut as well as in Washington, DC admitted to the bar and the Supreme Court of the United States. She speaks French and Russian, is married and has two daughters and a son. She lives in Brooklyn with her family .
