José Enrique Alvarez

José Enrique Alvarez (* 1955 ) is an American lawyer and professor at New York University .

Education and professional career

Alvarez attended Harvard University between 1973 and 1977 , where he earned a degree in social sciences . This is followed by a two-year study at the castle Magdalen College of Oxford University at. In 1981, after completing two years of study, he obtained a Juris Doctor degree from Harvard Law School. During his PhD he worked on the editorial board of the Harvard International Law Journal . After completing his training, Alvarez initially worked as a research assistant for Judge Thomas Gibbs Gee at the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit . From 1982 to 1983 he worked as a lawyer at the law firm Shea & Gardner in Washington, DC operates. In 1983 he received a call to Georgetown University . He also advised the United States Department of State on foreign direct investment issues . Among other things, he was responsible for the proceedings before the Iran-United States Claims Tribunal . He was also an advisor to the United States Agency for International Development . 1989 switched to a professorship at George Washington University . In 1994 he became director of the Institute for International and Comparative Law at the University of Michigan Law School . He held this position until 1999, before moving to a professorship in international law and diplomacy at Columbia University . Since the fall semester of 2009 he has held the Herbert and Rose Rubin Professorship for International Law at New York University. In addition, he heads the LL.M. -University program. From May 2010 to June 2012 he advised the Office of the Chief Prosecutor at the International Criminal Court on questions of international law.

Memberships and honors

Alvarez was a member of the American Bar Association in 1992 and 1996 . He has been on the editorial staff of the American Journal of International Law since 1997 and has been its editor-in-chief since April 2013 . His deputy in this position is Benedict Kingsbury . Between 2006 and 2008, Alvarez was President of the American Society for International Law .
