Benedict Kingsbury

Benedict Kingsbury (* 1961 ) is a New Zealand lawyer and professor at New York University .

Education and professional career

Kingsbury received his graduate degree from the University of Canterbury , where he earned a Bachelor of Laws in 1981 with a major in business law . This is followed by a joined a Rhodes scholarship funded studies at Balliol College of Oxford University at. He graduated in 1984 with a Master of Philosophy with a focus on international relations . Kingsbury initially stayed in Oxford and did his doctorate with Ian Brownlie . After completing his dissertation, he was in Oxford as a lecturer in law before joining in 1993 call for a professorship at Duke University accepted. In 1998 he moved to New York University. Until 2009 he was also responsible for the coordination of the LL.M. Program. Kingsbury has been Director of the Institute for International Law since 2002. His research focuses on international administrative law . In addition, he has specialized in questions of the legal status of indigenous peoples within international law. In addition to his work at New York University, Kingsbury has held several visiting professorships , including at Harvard University , the universities in Tokyo and Padua , and at the Sorbonne in Paris .

Kingsbury was admitted to the New Zealand Bar in 1985.

Memberships and honors

In 1999, Kingsbury was awarded the Ferenc Deák Prize of the American Society for International Law . He has been co-editor of the American Journal of International Law since 2003 , and has been deputy editor-in-chief alongside José Enrique Alvarez since April 2013 . In addition, he advises several international law journals, such as the European Journal of International Law . Kingsbury is a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Centro Internazionale di Studi Gentiliani.
