United States Institute of Peace
The United States Institute of Peace (USIP) is a US federal agency dedicated to researching and preventing violent conflicts around the world. The US Congress decided to create the USIP and President Ronald Reagan signed the law in 1984. This law prohibits USIP from accepting private donations; Federal funding is intended to protect it from being influenced.
Located in Washington, DC USIP resident is active in more than 30 countries, including Sudan , South Sudan , Afghanistan , Pakistan and Iraq . In 2006 the USIP formed the cross-party Iraq Study Group .
Richard H. Solomon , former US Ambassador to the Philippines , has been President of USIP since 1993 . His successor, former Congressman Jim Marshall , was only briefly in office. Kristin Lord provisionally led the institute from 2013–2014 until Nancy Lindborg took her oath of office as president in February 2015.
