The 109th UCI Track Cycling World Championships found from February 27 to March 3, 2019 in the BGŻ BNP Paribas Arena in Polish Pruszkow instead.

The Velodrom has hosted international track cycling competitions on several occasions, including World Championships in 2009 , European Championships in 2010 and the 2017/18 Track Cycling World Cup here.

The title fights formed the conclusion of the first half of the qualification for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo .

The competitions

On the first day of the competition, there was a mass fall in the last lap of the women's scratch race, in which ten riders were involved, who then had to give up the race. Among them were the Swiss Aline Seitz and the Austrian Verena Eberhardt . The German rider Franziska Brauße was spared the fall and finished fifth. None of the fallen riders suffered serious injuries.

On the second day, the Australian four-man team made up of Sam Welsford , Kelland O'Brien , Leigh Howard and Alexander Porter in the team pursuit set a new world record with 3: 48.012 minutes , undercutting their own record of 3: 49.804 minutes April 2018 as part of the Commonwealth Games . Shortly afterwards, four-man Sam Welsford won the scratch race, so that he won two gold medals in a row within an hour.

On the third day of the competition, Domenic Weinstein set a new German record of 4: 09.091 minutes in the qualification of the single pursuit and thus undercut his own from August 2018. A time of 4: 05.172 minutes was originally shown on the scoreboard, which is a world record would have been; this time was later corrected. The Italian Filippo Ganna also had a wrong time with an alleged world record on the display board. In the final, Weinstein lost to the Italian and won silver. The next day Lisa Brennauer also set a new German record in the single pursuit with 3: 25.697 minutes. In the end she won silver behind the Australian Ashlee Ankudinoff and ahead of her teammate Lisa Klein . The German Franziska Brauße took seventh place, which means that the German team was able to place three drivers in the top eight.

The World Cup victory of the German Roger Kluge together with Theo Reinhardt in the two-man team driving on the last day of the World Championships caused a media sensation : On Saturday he had contested the last stage of the UAE Tour on the road and was only on Sunday afternoon with the plane arrived in Warsaw from the United Arab Emirates . Almost four hours later he started at the world championships and together with Reinhardt defended the world championship title from the previous year.

The most successful teams were those from the Netherlands and Australia. Kirsten Wild from the Netherlands won four medals, two gold, one silver and one bronze, and was once again the most successful participant in a World Track Championship. Among the Dutch men, the sprint athletes were particularly successful, especially the youngest team member Harrie Lavreysen with two golds. Third place in the medal table went to Hong Kong with two gold medals, both won by short-term specialist Lee Wai-sze . The most successful athletes among the Australians were Ashlee Ankudinoff and Sam Welsford , each with two gold medals. In total, athletes from 17 different countries were able to win medals.

The German team took fourth place in the medal table with a total of six medals. The Swiss as well as the Austrian selection came away empty-handed.
